About Us
BiographyIt's one thing to write songs about praise, or having faith, and believing in miracles. It's another thing to keep praising, keep having faith, keep believing in miracles when you're the one that needs the miracle. When it's you or your loved one growing sicker every day and you don't know if you can continue. When it's you having to trust God and wait confidently for Him to show up! In three decades of traveling the United States singing, preaching, recording and writing more than 200 songs, Mike Payne had chart-topping hits in the Southern Gospel industry with titles like "God Delivers Again", "Still Standing After the Storm", and "Can I Get A Witness". And by the fall of 2009, Mike and his wife, Loreen, needed a miracle of their own. The pair met in the early 1970s at a tiny Grafton church. Mike had already been trying his hand at music, forming the Mike Payne Trio with his brothers. He felt pulled to God's music - and with Loreen, they started a small band called the Glorious Gospel Heirs. Within a few years, the pair married and had a daughter, Sandra - and the band eventually became "The Payne Family". A string of chart-topping hits followed, ushering The Paynes into a heady time of growing popularity in a small but loyal industry that was adapting many moves of its secular counterpart, such as music videos and dedicated cable channels. The Paynes did the 1st Concept Video in Southern Gospel Music. During the 1980s and leading into the early 1990s, The Payne family had an agency, recorded several albums, spawning top 10 hits, including several that went all the way to number one. Mike Payne wrote "The Conversation", "Out of This World", "I'm a Jesus Fan", and in 1986 co-wrote "When He Was On The Cross, I Was On His Mind" with Ronnie Hinson. Mike's music traveled around the world as many nationally known artists started recording covers of his songs. Among others, his work has been recorded by Bill and Gloria Gaither, The Crabb Family, The Cathedrals, Ernie Hass and Signature Sound, John Hagee, Kenneth Hagin, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw and the world-renowned Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. But the band - made up of many of Mike's relatives, who held full-time jobs and headed families while touring the country on weekends - disbanded in 1990. Mike and Loreen began to travel independently, with Mike preaching as much as singing. Often their daughter, Sandra, accompanied them. Sandra was an accomplished artist in her own right, releasing two independent projects that won national acclaim. Sandra Payne's music - which is much less traditional than her parents, leaning toward contemporary inspirational Christian music - won her first album a coveted "Indie" award. The trio continued to record, with songs such as "Prayer Still Changes Things" and "Still Standing After the Storm" - both sung by Loreen - reaching the top 40. The songs were especially poignant given Loreen's personal testimony: she had suffered juvenile diabetes since she was 13. Years on the road had taken their toll; numerous eye surgeries, medication changes, heart disease, nerve damage, and failing kidneys followed. By October 2009, her doctors gave her their grim forecast: You must go on dialysis. You need a kidney. Lord, I do not want to go on dialysis. Lord, please. Loreen's kidneys managed to function just enough to keep her from dialysis for a few more months, but it was an inevitability, the specialists said. Arrangements were being finalized for her daughter, Sandra, to donate a kidney. Still, Loreen's hopes for avoiding dialysis were dim. "I have been doing this for more than 28 years and I have only seen two patients - EVER - get a transplant before they went on dialysis", one specialist said. "Well, I'm going to be the third", Loreen replied, standing on The Rock of Faith which is Jesus Christ. Later that week, the call came in the middle of the night: a kidney and pancreas were being prepared at The Cleveland Clinic. Could she come? An unselfish family, in the depths of their despair, had made the decision to reach out to someone that did not know and donate their loved one's organs. Loreen States: "This is a Glimpse into the Divine Nature of God"!She was the third patient the doctor ever had to skip dialysis. And Prayer Still Changes Things. Three months later - while still healing from the intensive surgery, but her diabetes completely gone for the first time in 38 years - Loreen was by Mike's side as they accepted their new roles: as Pastors of Cathedral of Life in North Ridgeville. They had been members of the church years before, and felt God calling them to full-time leadership of the church during the soul-searching time of reflection during Loreen's illness. They felt strongly about bringing their ministry back to Mike's hometown, and want to use the national and international platform their performing ministry earned to "springboard" evangelism for their community, their country and the world. The church’s mission statement is "Passion for God, Passion for People". When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, He replied: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind. "This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like unto it: "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets". (Matthew 22:37-40) "At The Cathedral of Life, we believe that when you do those two commandments, you cover it all... Love God and love people. At this church, we're doing just that". ---- Pastors Mike and Loreen Payne
